Biogéochimie Intégrative de la Zone critique (BIZ)

L'être humain exerce une pression sur son environnement qui s'est exacerbée durant l'Anthropocène et accélérée durant les 200 dernières années avec l'utilisation des ressources fossiles. La relative stabilité et la capacité de régulation de la planète Terre ont permis le développement de l'espèce humaine après la révolution néolithique mais sont menacées voire déjà affectées. La dynamique des écosystèmes et leurs interactions avec les multiples pressions anthropiques sont encore mal connues. Au sein de ces écosystèmes, les cycles biogéochimiques sont perturbés de manière globale (C, N, Pb, Hg…) mais également locale/régionale, à l’échelle d’un bassin versant (par ex. cas des intrants azotés ou de pesticides sur une parcelle agricole ou bien d’éléments trace métalliques (ETM) dans une ancienne zone minière de montagne).

L’objectif général de BIZ est de mieux comprendre le fonctionnement des écosystèmes de la zone critique soumis à des perturbations anthropiques comme la dispersion de polluants chimiques (dans l’atmosphère, les sols et les systèmes aquatiques) ou les modifications globales des cycles du carbone, de l’azote, du phosphore et la charge en poussières atmosphériques. BIZ s’attachera à répondre à 3 grandes questions :

  1. Quels sont les facteurs déterminant la dynamique des flux biogéochimiques entrants et sortants des zones critiques en milieu rural et/ou distants de sources de pollution?
  2. Quelles interactions entre la physico-chimie du milieu  et les communautés d’organismes à l’intérieur de la Zone Critique?
  3. Quelles sont les dynamiques de ces interactions?

BIZ développe donc une approche biogéochimique multi-échelles et multi-variables intégrant un ensemble de pressions anthropiques sur le fonctionnement des écosystèmes de la zone critique. Le rôle et fonctionnement éco-géochimique de cette zone seront intégrés dans la modélisation hydro-biogéochimique de bassins versants impactés par des évènements climatiques courts/extrêmes et des perturbations anthropiques chroniques/aigües. L’objectif primordial et constant de BIZ est d’observer, de décrypter et de prédire les interactions éco-géochimiques au sein de la zone critique.

BIZ est composé de 13 chercheurs et enseignants chercheurs permanents, de 3 ingénieurs et techniciens et de nombreux post-doctorants, chercheurs contractuels et doctorants. L’interdisciplinarité et le dynamisme de BIZ garantissent de mener à bien les objectifs pré-mentionnés.
