1987 PhD. in Science at the Free Flemish University of Brussels (VUB). Thesis title: Zooplankton grazing in the Eastern Scheldt.

Main field of interest:

Trophic role of zooplankton in estuarine environments: selectivity of zooplankton feeding using incubation experiments, gut contents and HPLC pigment analysis. 

Zooplankton response to changing water quality: community composition and spatio-temporal distribution.

Trophic role of meiobenthos in phototrophic biofilms (in collaboration with Evelyne Buffan-Dubau, EcoLab).


2011-2015: Assistant Director EcoLab

2011-2016: Co-responsible of MSc program ‘Ecology and biosciences of the Environment’ (EBEN).

2007-2011: Co-responsible of MSc program ‘Functional Ecology and Anthropisation’ (FEA).

2007-2010. Coordinator of research team ‘Pelago s- Benthos Biological Interactions’ (INTERBIO) of EcoLab.


Supervision of PhD thesis

I (co) supervised 12 PhD thesis treating mainly zooplankton - particulate matter interactions in estuarine and coastal systems. Two thesis co-supervised with Evelyne-Buffan-Dubau (EcoLab) treated the meiobenthic communities of phototrophic biofilms.
